IWKC are a Moscow based band and IWKC stands for I Will Kill Chita. I don’t know who Chita is or what Chita did to the band for what matter. Their new 4 song EP is called “Cargo Cult” and personally, I think that’s a better name for the band. But I’m not here to review the band’s name. Although that might actually be easier to do!
For a brief outing, “Cargo Cult” is a bit all over the place stylistically. It starts out really well with “Survival Instruction” which reminds me a bit of Long Distance Calling, who I love. This is an excellent track to be sure. But it’s also by far my favorite track. Things go in other directions from there.
“Cho Blya!?” is a horn driven funk track with spoken vocals that are pretty damn annoying. Musically it’s somewhat interesting but completely a different style from the first track. “Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti” is space rock which reminds me a bit of Ozric Tentacles though not in the same league. Many of the gurgles and beeps are really annoying rather than interesting.
“Keine Angst” closes the EP and yes it’s a completely different sound for IWKC once again. It’s a synth driven, slow burn that reminds me a bit of Zombi…until the mid point of the track when that stops. The song morphs into an ambient number at that point. It’s one thing to give each track it’s own identity but it’s another to make them sound unrelated to each other.
“Cargo Cult” sounds like a band either experimenting to find a direction or showcases their various influences. The problem is that the listener isn’t exactly sure what’s going on. I will say that “Survival Instruction” really suits me and I wish there was more in that direction. “Keine Angst” is close to that song enough that it might work but with 2 tracks in between that don’t make a lot of sense, the EP really falls flat for me.
