Between the band name, the album title and the super cool album cover, I knew I had to check out “Sci Fi or Die” by Droids Attack. How prog is it? Fortunately, just enough to please fans who like riff heavy, off-kilter metal. I am sure they get classified as “stoner metal” but they really have more in common with prog metal bands like Mastodon or Anciients than any of the Sabbath influenced stoner bands.
“Claw Hammer Suicide” is a prime example of how to use an odd time signature here and there to make a song both trickier and yet groovier at the same time. Plus the band have an awesome 2 part epic in “Mashenomak ” and “Mashenomak Strikes Again.” The riffs are massive but they twist and turn throughout the former before kicking into overdrive on the latter.
They even use vintage keys on songs like the opener “Die Glocke” or “The Annunaki.” I do wish that they were more prevalent as they really could spice up their sound even more. Still, the mix and production are stellar. This is a heavy, meaty album and the songs needed a thick sound.
“Sci Fi or Die” is exactly the album I was hoping it would be. The songs strong, the arrangements are tight and Droids Attack do exactly that. If you like your metal with a blast of sand and grit, “Sci Fi or Die” is a wise choice.
