It doesn’t get much more epic than a 4 part post metal concept album. I have always considered post rock and post metal to be a part of prog and the new album by Abraham, “Look, Here Comes the Dark!” is possibly one of the best examples ever of this. This album is AMBITIOUS! 19 songs, almost 2 hours of challenging music.
Abraham can be brutal, then melodic and then atmospheric. The band have used the many facets of their style to separate the album into 4 periods: Anthropocene, Phytocene, Myocene and Oryktocene. The overall theme and concept of the album is the end of times which is something that lends itself well to what the band sound like. The first part is about the end of civilization. The second part is vegetation taking over the architecture. The third is where that vegetation yields to a larger fungus that controls remaining life. While the final period is the complete desolation of Earth. Fun stuff huh?
Each period has its own specific music that goes with it. From the over the top assault of the Anthropocene tracks to the doomy songs within the Phytocene period to the very experimental vibe on Myocene to the minimalistic Oryktocene. This is a LOT to listen to at once and I don’t even mean from a sheer quantity perspective. Rather, this album conveys the emotions of each section so perfectly that you are exhausted by the end.
Panic to death to bizarre to a void. There is no happy ending here. What there is is a masterful album. The music is heavy when it should be and atmospheric when it should be. Vocals are harsh but can also be clean yet almost broken sounding. This is indeed a post metal masterpiece that has set the bar extremely high for not only Abraham in the future but any band that thinks they are post metal. The lines have been drawn.
