Steve Hackett – “Wuthering Nights: Live in Birmingham”

Steve Hackett - Wuthering Nights_ Live in BirminghamAnother year, another Steve Hackett live album? It does seem like Steve releases one for every tour he does but I do think the fan base that he has developed over the years warrants it. He can really do as he likes at this point. Though the fans have a big say in all of that. That’s why Genesis remains a big part of the setlist for his tours.

This new live album is for his “Wuthering Nights” tour where Steve celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Genesis album “Wind and Wuthering” along with music from his latest album “The Night Siren,” one of his best albums in my opinion. The band sound great as they always do and Steve is brilliant.

So it really comes down to, do you want the setlist? It’s no different than attending the show itself. Now, I am not a huge live album fan. If I have a choice between listening to the original version of a track or a live version, more often than not I will choose the studio version. In this case, I think being AT the show or watching the DVD with this set are what make the show important.

Steve’s solo material (old and new) sounds phenomenal. But it’s the choices from the 40 year old “Wind and Wuthering” that make this set interesting. He doesn’t do the whole album but I think he picks ALL the right songs. He even does the B-side “Inside and Out” which is such a great track. It BELONGED on “Wind and Wuthering” and was one of the reasons I think Steve left Genesis.

The DVD also has a cool behind the scenes documentary and three music videos for songs from “The Night Siren.” I think it’s one of his best live albums. For as much as I love “Firth of Fifth,” do I really need yet another live version? Well, maybe not but I can’t imagine him not doing the song. Another great live album from a true prog legend!
