Words of Farewell – “A Quiet World”

wf_aqw-c_2400x2400I’ve heard a lot of buzz about this album so I was very excited to get a chance to review it. While I recognize that Words of Farewell are a solid band that sound great, “A Quiet World” is a fairly generic sounding album. There are so many bands that are in the same musical area as Words of Farewell, like Scar Symmetry, Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, even In Flames, that this band needs to do something to sound different. Unfortunately, they are largely forgettable.

The songs have a sameness to them. So much so that I really don’t recall one song from the next, and I listened to this album quite a lot lately. The only track that stands out is the final one, “This Shadow My Likeness.” This is a GREAT song. Well is it great or just better than the rest of the album? It actually has an epic feel and DYNAMICS!

The main issue is that the songs tend to just do the same things over and over. There’s not much change even within the songs themselves. But “This Shadow My Likeness” does change and grabs your attention in the process. Words of Farewell should explore that a lot more. Until they do, they will be overshadowed by so many bands that are better songwriters. That said, if you like the bands I mentioned, you might have a soft spot for this band.
