Switzerland’s Khaldera are one of those instrumental post metal bands that I really like. They remind me a bit of Russian Circles but they have the massive riffs that Tempel also have, and I love Tempel. “Alteration” is a 3 song EP that really just feels like one extended piece.
The opening track “Impending Tempest” (aptly titled) builds slowly before the almighty riff comes in and kicks your ass. Since it builds so slowly, the riff comes in seemingly late in the track. Ah but if you consider the song to be the intro of one long song versus 3 separate tracks, it makes a lot more sense.
“The Inevitability Of Transition” is the meat of the EP. It has the biggest riffs and the powerful moments. “Afterglow” is also aptly titled since it is mellow and feels more like an outro for the whole EP. The 3 tracks fit together perfectly and as a whole piece “Alteration” builds and builds, then peaks and lets you go quietly.
The production on “Alteration” is as massive as the riffs. Everything is executed well. The one down side? I wanted more than this!! “Alteration” is a helluva introduction to a very good band. Now I want more Khaldera and you will too after listening to this EP! The EP is out on August 26, 2016.
