Suns of Thyme – “Cascades”

662_SOT_RGBIt sounds strange for me to say that I need a challenge every now and then. I listen to so much music but many times it can blend together, even if it’s technical or avant-garde. So when I read a bit about Suns of Thyme and their mix of styles, it really intrigued me and I had to check out “Cascades.”

The band mix styles from very different eras to form their own style. They have influences from the 70s in psych rock, krautrock and space rock, influences from the 80s in shoegaze and a modern indie rock sensibility. How they mix them is to not overly blend them. What I mean is that they will have a classic psych keyboard sound, electronic percussion, shoegaze vocal all on top of a very catchy sound. Each influence is clear and separate yet fit very interestingly together.

My favorite tracks range from the first single/video “Intuition Unbound” to the very hooky “Rush” to the more expansive “Schweben.” How prog are they? I think the simple fact they they experiment so openly with classic sounds from very different places and make it work is very progressive. Many people say there’s nothing new out there, but recycling isn’t a bad thing if it’s done to create a new beast.

“Cascades” is all about the 80s new wave-like vocals of Tobias Feltes coupled with keyboardist Tammo Dehn use of various vintage sounds. If you merged Junius with Alcest and forced them to listen to Velvet Underground, you have a very rough idea of what Suns of Thyme are about. “Cascades” is a surprise for me, a very enjoyable album that goes in many directions all at the same time yet does so with grace and freshness.

Hi, bookmarking your site for future reference.
Just read you like psych rock. Give Chui Wan a listen or two then (they have 2 albums!)
Scroll down a little on both pages and you can listen to their entire albums!
