Czech post rockers Dreare are a very good band. The problem that I ran into when listening to their album “Blank and Forward” was there was far too much blank and not enough forward. Post rock, like any great genre, depends on riffs. You need a lot of riffs and they better be really good riffs.
Dreare have a tendency to stay way too long with a riff and unfortunately those riffs aren’t the meatiest ones either. Things get too repetitive and since these are long songs, it becomes a marathon. The good news is that they are quite good at atmosphere. They know how to set mood and drama which is half the battle.
The main problem was that each time I’d listen to “Blank and Forward,” it wouldn’t hold my attention and truly captivate me. The songs are far from being bad songs, to be clear. Also, this is Dreare’s first outing so if you take that into account, it will be very interesting to see how this band develops. Post rock fans should still check this band out and certainly keep an eye on them.
NOTE: this album is available as “Name Your Price” on Bandcamp!
