Moonsorrow are back after 5 years with their latest opus, “Jumalten Aika.” It’s not going to surprise fans of the band since it’s the epic pagan folk metal that the band have done for years now. All of the elements that make Moonsorrow great are still very music present on “Jumalten Aika.”
Each track (save “Suden tunti”) is long and epic with movements, atmosphere and power. Whether you feel like you are sitting by a campfire or walking through the woods or down by a river, the atmosphere is always present. The title track starts things off very symphonically. It’s a huge, majestic opener and a great way to start.
“Ruttolehto” is next and while it does start off heavy, midway thru it becomes a hypnotic, folk anthem. That section becomes a massive pagan metal spectacle. “Ihmisen aika (Kumarrus pimeyteen)” is another favorite and makes a magnificent closer. Drummer Marko Tarvonen really shines on this track and on all of “Jumalten Aika” and he is so underrated in the metal community.
If you are familiar with Moonsorrow’s brand of epic pagan metal, you will not be disappointed in the least with “Jumalten Aika.” If you are new to the glory that is Moonsorrow and have no fear of walking the hinterland with the talented Fins, “Jumalten Aika” is as good a place to start your journey.
