NYC’s Tombs are back with a new EP called “All Empires Fall” and yes they are better than ever! What I love about Tombs is that they mix an old school death metal style with a modern epic post metal sound. They’ve added Fade Kainer on synths and electronics which REALLY opens their sound up even more.
The EP kicks off with an incredible instrumental called “The World is Made of Fire” that showcases Kainer’s abilities when it comes to adding mood and atmosphere. The EP bounces back and forth from experimental track to traditional Tombs track with “Obsidian” and “Deceiver” being the venom and bile soaked attack that Tombs is known for.
But it’s tracks like the opener and the third track “Last Days of Sunlight” that show that Tombs is pushing their sound to new places. It’s amazing too. They’ve always felt like a post metal version of Celtic Frost to me. You don’t always know what’s coming next which is one reason I really like this band.
The crowning achievement of “All Empires Fall” is the closing track “V” that successfully marries the two sides of the band into one haunting, majestic, HEAVY 6 plus minute epic. Vocally, Mike Hill sounds like Tom G. Warrior which is one reason I compare them to Celtic Frost. I suppose the only complaint I have is that this is an EP! I wish I could have more of this!
“All Empires Fall” should serve as a warning to the metal community. Tombs are capable of harnessing their apocalyptic, Cult of Luna like power and channeling it through their black metal prism. This is a band that is willing to do whatever they need to do. I can’t wait for more from Tombs to see where they are heading.
