Prosthetic Records have done it again. They sign some of the best bands out there and Spirit Adrift continue that winning streak. Their debut EP “Behind – Beyond” has 2 songs, both of which are epic. Classifying the band is one of the things that make them so damn good.
Spirit Adrift are equal parts doom, prog, psych rock and even classic rock. The key to the success of “Behind – Beyond” is the almighty riff. Both tracks have tons of great riffs that, although the riffs change a lot, they each fit perfectly together. And even with just two songs, there’s a lot going on with one track over 12 minutes and the other being over 15 minutes!!
Both songs even have tempo changes which is why you can’t assume either track is going to be a doom song. The ending of “Perpetual Passage” takes off into a full on gallop showing the band is like Neurosis on speed. Another thing I love is the vocals. Guitarist JK is an awesome singer! Check out the great harmonies that he does on each song!
If you ever wondered what Mastodon might sound like if they jammed with Ahab after listening to old Pink Floyd, you have a rough idea of what to expect on “Behind – Beyond” by Spirit Adrift. The one thing that I wanted from this EP and didn’t get was MORE of it! I look forward to a full length album from these guys!
