The self-titled debut EP from Hällas has one foot firmly planted in classic 70s rock. Now I know what you’re thinking. A LOT of bands nowadays are doing that. What makes Hällas different is that they incorporate plenty of prog rock with dual guitar lines and excellent keyboard passages.
Hällas have more in common with Uriah Heep and Wishbone Ash than Yes or Genesis but it’s that rocking edge that makes this EP a lot of fun to listen to. Hällas can really rock and at the same time they take enough detours in the 4 tracks on this EP to keep prog fans interested.
I do wish that they’d done a longer piece of music, maybe a 10 minute epic with some excellent soloing. Maybe that’s what’s to come. This is just an introduction to Hällas and a fine introduction at that. I think they are a cut above bands like Kadavar or Graveyard. Hällas is in the same league as Witchcraft. Excellent music, strong melodies and a kick ass style all add up to a winner of an EP.
