It’s hard to not have at least some preconceived notions when you are sitting down to listen to an album for the first time as part of the review process. Obviously with bands that I know, it’s impossible. But with bands that are new to me, usually I am given some background on them to help out. I try not to read too much because I don’t want to color things too much.
With the self-titled debut EP from Watercolour Ghosts, I saw comparisons to bands that I love: Katatonia, Soen and Karnivool. I also noticed that it featured Chaos Divine drummer Ben Mazzarol. So I went into it expecting to be completely blown away. I was not. I’ve tried each time listening to it to be blown away, and that’s not working.
Watercolour Ghosts are excellent players and the style of music does fit into the prog of the three aforementioned bands. The problem is the songs are just not great. They are all decent but unfortunately not very memorable. Given that this is the band’s first EP, it stands to reason that the best is yet to come from them. I hope that’s the case because I do like their overall style, moody and somewhat melancholic but still rocking. Hopefully, this is just a quick introduction to Watercolour Ghosts and next they will show everyone what they are truly capable of.
