Cyrax – “Pictures”

CYRAX-COVER.jpgI’d never heard of Cyrax prior to getting “Pictures” in the review queue. This Italian band mixes prog rock ideals with symphonic metal. There are some operatic vocals on the album, for example “These Greenvalleys” and “Opedipus Rex.” The closest influence or overall comparison to them would be Therion. Cyrax has maybe more of a quirkier vibe to them.

The vocals even sound a bit like the late, great Midnight (of Crimson Glory) at times. Those of you who remember him will recall how he would emote certain words and go into his higher register. Add that to a harsher overall delivery and you have an idea of what to expect.

Overall, “Pictures” is a solid album with plenty of fireworks, top notch playing and good vocals. If you like prog rock that veers more on the metallic side with plenty of Orchestral and Symphonic Metal flourishes, Cyrax might be the band for you and “Pictures” is worth checking out.
