On paper, Deathwhite seemed to be a band I would really enjoy and to an extent, I do enjoy them. The “Solitary Martyr” EP has good songs, good vocals and decent enough riffs. One problem is that I am never in love with anything on the EP. Everything is good but not great.
Deathwhite are modern prog in the vein of mid-period Anathema. They sound like they might have been more doom in a past life. The problem is that their songs are not to the level of Anathema or Katatonia. The riffs are a bit noisy and don’t always fit the vibe of the songs. Each time there is a good hook, the guitars are a touch too loud in the mix.
The good news is that this is just their second EP. They have room to grow much like Katatonia and Anathema did over the years. They have the talent too. The song “Vain” is a good example of a VERY solid hook and chorus that could be massive. Deathwhite is so close but just not there yet. But I think this is a band to keep an eye on.
