Johnny in the Jungle – “Postcard from Norilsk”

a1065258922_16This is one of those “good news/bad news” type reviews. I’ll start with the good news! The 3 song EP “Postcard from Norilsk” has some great instrumental post rock on it with hints of prog rock in it. All 3 songs are well written and executed. The band can definitely play and understand how to play to fit the song.

The bad news? First off, the band’s name “Johnny in the Jungle” is pretty terrible as names go and really doesn’t fit their sound at all. The biggest problem for me is all the narration over the songs. Fortunately, it’s not ALL the time but it’s enough to really cause me to not enjoy myself. This is personal preference. I think some spoken word samples are great for a song but to have narration front and center on every track is a bit annoying.

Many people will enjoy this EP despite my criticism of the narration. I have no doubt that a lot of listeners will enjoy it. But for me, it really takes away from some stellar music that didn’t need all the chatter over it.

Rating: 7/10
Tracklist:
1. We Are Trapped
2. Nickel Rush
3. Thawing and Flood
